McLaren 570S Spider. The one we would actually want to buy.

Buying a used McLaren is very different from simply buying a used car.

The purchase price is only one part of the equation. What matters just as much is what has happened to the car beforehand, what maintenance has been postponed, which small faults have been ignored and whether somebody has already invested the time and money necessary to put the car into the condition it should be in.

That is what makes this particular 2018 McLaren 570S Spider interesting.

We do not have to guess where it came from or discover the car for the first time now that it is for sale. We were involved with the car before the previous owner purchased it, and once it arrived with us it received the sort of comprehensive attention that has become known around here simply as the Thorney love.

And there was quite a lot of it.

First, the car itself.

Finished in Vega Blue Elite Paint, the 570S Spider has one of those colours that suits the shape perfectly. In lower light it remains deep and elegant, then sunlight brings the blue properly alive.

Against that sits the darker exterior treatment, with Dark Palladium front splitter, Aero Blades, side skirts, rear bumper, rear deck and engine covers, diffuser and rear spoiler. The exhaust finishers are Stealth, while the factory Sports Exhaust provides the part you actually hear.

Inside, the specification remains purposeful rather than overdone.

The car has the Nappa Sport interior in Jet Black, Carbon Black Alcantara headlining and Apex Red stitching and detailing throughout the cabin. There is a Bowers & Wilkins 12-speaker audio system for those rare moments when the V8 is not providing the soundtrack.

It also has the equipment that genuinely matters when you use one of these cars rather than simply look at it.

And, naturally, the folding hardtop that turns the 570S into a genuine Spider without taking away the structure and presence of the coupé when the roof is closed.

Then comes the important part. What has actually been done to it?

A great deal.

The car received an extensive workshop programme with us rather than the usual oil change, inspection stamp and quick detail before resale.

The braking system was attended to, including OEM front and rear brake pads, wear sensors and fitting hardware, together with additional work to the front brake calipers and their mounting threads.

The original tyre specification was Pirelli P ZERO. Those are no longer on the car. It now runs on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, mounted and balanced as part of the preparation. The wheels were inspected and minor cosmetic damage was corrected, followed by suspension and steering alignment.

The suspension itself received considerably more attention than an alignment alone. Suspension rubber joints and bushings were refreshed, using a substantial replacement parts package, before the geometry was set again.

The cooling system was addressed as well. The water-pump sealing system and electric water pump were refurbished, new gaskets were installed and the cooling system was refilled with fresh coolant.

The intake and intercooler areas were opened for a deep clean and inspection, dealing with precisely the places where dirt and road debris accumulate over years of real-world use.

Underneath the car, missing and corroded fixings were replaced. The rear right wheel-arch liner was replaced, additional protective plastics were installed to the front wheel-arch areas, and the front lower underbody cover and skid plates were renewed.

The rear diffuser was removed and correctly rebonded.

The right front fender received corrosion rectification, refinishing and proper refitting.

The doors were aligned and checked, including the emergency release cables on both sides, and the Soft Close system and panel gaps were adjusted.

The door seals were serviced.

Inside the cabin, the passenger seat backrest cover was correctly refitted and treated, and the dashboard cover received corrective work.

The fuel-filler flap and opening mechanism were realigned.

The windscreen-wiper arms were refinished.

Four gas struts and lifters were replaced.

The second key was updated and the key batteries renewed.

The car received an upgraded battery together with a CTEK charger, case and adapter.

A tracker was installed with a two-year subscription.

Diagnostic history and vehicle systems were worked through as part of the technical preparation.

Finally, the car received extensive interior and exterior detailing and performance-grade paint-protection work.

This is therefore not a 570S Spider where we are telling the next owner what he or she should probably consider doing after purchase.

A very significant amount of that work has already happened.

Why a 570S Spider?

Because beneath all the numbers, the 570S remains one of McLaren's sweetest road cars.

The carbon-fibre structure keeps the car light and exceptionally rigid. The steering communicates in a way very few modern cars manage. The twin-turbo V8 provides proper supercar performance, yet the car remains small enough and sufficiently usable that taking it somewhere does not have to become an expedition.

And then you remove the roof.

The Sports Exhaust becomes considerably more relevant.

The turbo noises become considerably more obvious.

Tunnels become considerably more childish.

And that is exactly as it should be.

A Spider should not be the sensible version of a supercar. It should be the version that makes you take the unnecessarily long road home.

Why this one?

Because specification is only half the story with a used McLaren.

The other half is condition and preparation.

This car has had substantial expenditure where it matters. Brakes, tyres, suspension, cooling system, underbody protection, body corrections, electronics, trim, alignment, detailing and preventative work have already received attention.

The documented vehicle and subsequent work represent well over 200.000,- € of expenditure, yet the car is now being offered at:

180.000,- €

For somebody looking for the cheapest 570S Spider on the internet, this probably is not the car.

For somebody who understands how quickly the cheapest McLaren can stop being the cheapest McLaren, it starts making considerably more sense.
